A little Ludwig drum history
In 1908, playing vaudeville jobs in Chicago, William F. Ludwig had an idea
to design a better wood drum pedal compared to the clumsy foot pedals that
were being used. With the help of a local cabinet maker, the new drum pedal
was made from wood and capable of faster tempos and power.
In 1910, the pedal was mass produced in a metal version. At that time William
and his brother, Theobald, formed the Ludwig & Ludwig company. The company
was sold to GC Conn in the late 1920's due to the business suffering from the
Great Depression. In 1937, William organized the WFL Drum Company with it's
first product being the famous Speed King Pedal. In 1955, the company name
was changed to the Ludwig Drum Company.
An opportunity of prominence was seized early in the 1960's when Ringo Starr
of the Beatles used a drumset manufactured by Ludwig. In 1981, the Ludwig
Drum Company was acquired by the Selmer Company, the largest
manufacturer and distributor of band and orchestral instruments.
Special attention is given to quality and excellence
Special attention is given to quality in the manufacturing Ludwig drum
hardware and drums. The drums are made of maple and birch and are
available in a variety of finishes. Sparkle finishes are popular with an array
of colors to choose from. The company prides itself in the selection of exotic
woods for their drum shells. Choose from Italian poplar, Phillipine mahogany,
also African Makore. The richness of these woods have great tones and
striking appearances to the drumset.
Ludwig snare drums receive unique touches as duly noted by the legendary Black Beauty snare drum. Solid drum hardware is both durable and versatile.
Regardless of one's level of playing, the prices of drum kits are quite reasonable.
